Some staircases we have fitted carpets in Nottingham have steps designed to turn corners these are known as winding stairs or simply ‘Winders’
and there are several important things to take into account when measuring them. When finding the width of a winding stair,always measure at the widest point.

This can feel odd as often your tape measure won’t be perfectly parallel to the edge of the step,as you can see here,but doing this will ensure that you have enough carpet to cover the whole area. Similarly,when measuring the depth and riser,measure starting from where the step is deepest. Unlike ordinary stairs,winders can be very different shapes as in our demonstration,so it’s important to measure each one separately. Another thing to bear in mind when measuring the depth and riser is that your tape measure should be at a right angle to the edge of the step.
This is important as the carpet needs to be fitted with the pile also at a right angle to this edge. This can be difficult to picture so there’s an example on floor-covering services Nottingham’s website. If the carpet is put against the wall the pile will be skewed when it goes over the step. But when the carpet is it is in line with the edge of the stair the pile runs smoothly ensuring that it looks correct and lasts longer. We used a striped carpet to make this clear,however it will be noticeable even on plain carpets. So,to recap,make sure to cover the farthest possible distance both in width and depth. This is easy to see on an ordinary stair but can be more tricky with a winder. Ensure when taking the depth measurement that your tape measure is perpendicular to the edge of the step. Now we can see how the carpet will be aligned with each step.
